relationships between ancient civilizations, and this remains true even today. This study focuses specifically on the Maccabees and their economic interactions with the Nabataeans, examining this aspect in isolation from other factors, such as religious and social ones, as suggested by many scholars. This approach highlights how the Maccabees transformed from a primarily agrarian, rebellious entity into a regional power controlling trade routes, thus becoming economic rivals of the Nabataeans. This competition for available resources shaped the nature of their relationship, characterized by conflict and temporary alliances, ultimately leading to the exhaustion of both the Maccabean and Nabataean powers and paving the way for Roman domination. Therefore, we argue that the economic life of various ancient civilizations, whether peaceful or antagonistic, was fundamentally driven by economic factors and resources, even if other factors, such as religion, appeared to be more prominent, as many scholars claim.
