Abstract

This research explores the life of the Fatimid vizier Ya‘qub ibn Killis, whose prominence emerged in the 4th century AH (10th century CE. He represents a historical figure who, through intelligence and acumen, transcended the boundaries of his social and religious identity to reach the pinnacle of political authority. The study poses several key questions: Who was Ibn Killis? What prompted his departure from al-Sham and his flight to Egypt? What role did he play in the Ikhshidid state, and how did he gain favor with its rulers? Why did he leave al-Sham, which was under the Ikhshidids, and head to Egypt? Was his conversion to Islam a purely religious transformation, or did it have political dimensions aligned with Fatimid interests? And why did he choose the Maghreb, then under Fatimid control—as his refuge? These and other questions will be examined and addressed throughout the course of this Research.
